Short answer: if you sell mostly inside Saudi Arabia, Salla is usually the easier choice. It is built for commerce, runs in Arabic and English, and lists mada, STC Pay, Apple Pay, Tabby and Tamara. Shopify is the better choice if you also sell abroad or want more control. One catch to know first: Shopify Payments is not available in Saudi Arabia, so a Saudi Shopify store needs a third-party payment provider.
I set up both: Salla stores for Saudi Arabia, and Shopify stores for businesses selling anywhere. So this is not a "one is bad" article. It is about which one fits which shop, with the facts I could check on each company's own pages.
What each platform is
Shopify is a global store platform. You pay a monthly plan, pick a theme, add products and connect a payment provider. Salla is a Saudi platform. Its own information page says it is "built exclusively for commerce" and not meant for ordinary websites, and that the admin works in Arabic and English.
If you only need a brochure site with a WhatsApp button, you need neither. A normal website costs less and has no monthly platform fee.
Payments in Saudi Arabia
This is where the two differ most.
- Salla says it supports mada, STC Pay, Apple Pay, Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and buy-now-pay-later services like Tabby and Tamara.
- Shopify keeps a list of countries where Shopify Payments works. Saudi Arabia is not on it (the UAE is). So a store in Saudi Arabia connects another payment provider instead.
Shopify charges extra when you use an outside provider: 2% on the Basic plan, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, on top of what the provider itself charges. That fee is easy to miss when you compare monthly prices.
What it costs
Shopify is simple to check. Basic is $39 a month, or $29 a month if you pay yearly. Grow is $105 ($79 yearly). Advanced is $399 ($299 yearly). Right now it offers a 3-day free trial, then $1 a month for the first 3 months.
For Salla I could not find current plan prices on its public pages, so I won't quote any. Open its pricing page in your own country, compare the plan you would really use, and ask what each plan includes before you decide.
Either way, the platform is only one part of the cost. You also pay for the theme, the products being set up properly, and the photos. My own price for a Shopify store starts at $490 and covers up to 20 products. See prices for the rest.
Language and customers
Most Saudi shoppers expect Arabic first. Both platforms can run an Arabic store. What matters more than the platform is the theme: some themes handle right-to-left text beautifully and some look broken. Whatever you choose, open the Arabic version of the demo on your phone before paying for it.
Which one for which shop
- Choose Salla if your customers are in Saudi Arabia, you want local payment and buy-now-pay-later options ready, and you prefer one Saudi platform to manage.
- Choose Shopify if you sell outside Saudi Arabia too, want more control over how the store looks, or may move to a different country later.
- Choose neither yet if you sell fewer than ten items. A WhatsApp catalogue and a simple Arabic and English website can be enough to start.
My take
For a small shop selling only inside Saudi Arabia, I would start on Salla. The payment options are ready, and you avoid paying an extra outside-provider fee. I would move a store to Shopify only when it starts selling abroad, or when the owner wants something the Salla themes can't do. Choosing the global platform for a local shop, because it is famous, is the most common mistake I see.
Where this falls short
I compared what the companies say on their own pages, as of 24 October 2026. I did not run a test order on each platform, and I could not check Salla's plan prices. Fees, plans and supported countries change, so confirm the current ones before you pay. If you are choosing for a bigger store, a one-hour call with someone who has built on both is worth it. If you want a Salla store built, see my Salla and Shopify store page (Arabic).
Quick answers
Is Shopify or Salla better for Saudi Arabia?
For a shop selling mainly inside Saudi Arabia, Salla is usually simpler because local payments are ready. Shopify is better if you also sell abroad.
Does Shopify Payments work in Saudi Arabia?
No. Saudi Arabia is not on Shopify's list of supported countries, so you connect a third-party payment provider instead.
How much does Shopify cost per month?
Basic is $39 a month ($29 if paid yearly), Grow is $105 ($79 yearly) and Advanced is $399 ($299 yearly), plus fees when you use an outside payment provider.
Can Salla take mada, Apple Pay and Tabby?
Yes. Salla lists mada, STC Pay, Apple Pay, Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Tabby and Tamara as supported.
Can I run a store in Arabic and English?
Yes, on both. Test the Arabic version of any theme on your phone before you buy it.
